Why Learn?

Parent: You need to study.

Child: Why?

P: So you will be smart.

C: Why?

P: Because if you get a good education you will be able to make things and do things.

C: Can't I just do what I want anyway?

P: You can try to do what ever you want, but if you learn about how everything works it will really help you to be successful.

C: But the fun part is figuring it out on my own, I don't want to just memorize a bunch of stuff other people figured out!

P: Education is not just memorizing a bunch of stuff other people figured out.

Education is you getting to benefit from the hard work of the people who came before you. The work of people discovering and learning about how everything works, they figured a bunch of stuff out so you don't have to.

When you educate yourself your getting caught up so you can continue the push forward and discover and make new things that add to the goodness in the world.

It's like trying to get to the top of a mountain.

The people who came before you have built an elevator that goes up half way, now you can take the elevator to get caught up and start working on making the elevator go higher.
